The American Gothic Performing Arts Festival (AGPAF) is a cultural destination event for the residents of Ottumwa, Wapello County, and their guests celebrating the performing arts, specifically musical theater, in an open and friendly atmosphere. Significant to the festival’s ongoing success is its location in Wapello County. World-renowned as the setting for Grant Wood’s painting American Gothic, Wapello County provides an incomparable setting for audiences and performers alike with its natural beauty, impressive array of preserved historical architecture, a fine collection of performance venues and welcoming communities. The multi-event festival will feature a variety of performances in a variety of locations throughout Ottumwa and Wapello County with the main venue being Bridge View Center in Ottumwa. The Festival will open with a performance at the McHaffey Opera House in Eldon during Gothic Days. Performances this summer and in subsequent summers will include full-length feature musicals, junior musicals presented by high school-aged students for younger audiences, other short plays, showings of movie musicals, storytelling, choral presentations, indie band performances of varying musical styles and collaborations with performing arts groups from throughout the area. Tangential events will include continuing education workshops for teachers, camps for students, exhibits, lectures and “talk back” conversations with the cast.
